Police consolidation research discussed

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM)– Leaders in Dauphin County continue to take a hard look at merging police departments.

A private firm has been tasked with researching police consolidation throughout Dauphin County.

At a meeting Wednesday night at Penn State Harrisburg leaders discussed a recent example of police consolidation that has worked. Swatara Township Police started providing police coverage for Paxtang Borough at the beginning of the year. Three months in Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico said everything is going well. He believes that this partnership will be the first of many to come in the future..

“We really need to take a hard look at how we do policing in Dauphin County. I think we can make some real improvements to public safety as well as save tax dollars by looking at consolidating different departments,” said Marsico.

The consolidation research is still ongoing.
