Mechanicsburg man gets 5 months for sports gambling operation

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Mechanicsburg man will spend five months in a federal prison for his role in an illegal sports gambling operation.

Steven Sheely Jr., 40, must also spend five months under house arrest following his prison release under a sentence handed down Wednesday before Senior U.S. District Court Judge William C. Caldwell.

Sheely was ordered to report for his sentence on April 7.

He pleaded guilty Dec. 4, to being involved with his father, Steven Sheely Sr., and seven others in a conspiracy to run the gambling operation that took in millions of dollars in illegal bets on many sporting events, mainly in central Pennsylvania.

Sheely Sr. recently pleaded guilty and agreed to forfeit roughly $800,000.00 in seized assets. He is awaiting sentencing.

A co-defendant, 68-year-old Michael Puglisse of Harrisburg, was sentenced last week to one year probation and ordered to pay a fine of $4,000.
