PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia police officer slain during a gunfight at a video game store has been honored at Sunday services at a north Philadelphia church.
The Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/1A8ONg0 ) reports that parishioners of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church praised 30-year-old Officer Robert Wilson III as a defender of the neighborhood.
The Rev. Stephen Thorne said Wilson “gave his life because he was deeply rooted in the community.”
Police said Wilson was buying a gift for his 9-year-old son at the store just two blocks from the church when he was killed during a robbery attempt.
Fellow officers from the 22nd District joined parishioners in walking to the altar to donate money for Wilson’s sons.
Funeral services have not been announced.
Two suspects are facing charges in the slaying.
