Teen arrested for carjacking elderly woman at Walmart

HANOVER, Pa. (WHTM) – A York County teenager was arrested Wednesday after police said he carjacked an elderly woman at knife-point in the parking lot of the Hanover Walmart.

The 69-year-old woman told police she was putting items in her car after shopping when the teen brandished a butterfly knife, demanded her keys, and ordered her to get in the car, West Manheim Township police said in a news release.

She handed over the keys, but refused to get into the car and ran away.

Police said a retired military veteran from Florida, visiting friends in the area, came to the woman’s aid and called 911 as the robber fled in her onto Baltimore Pike.

The woman was not injured.

Penn Township officers tried to stop the stolen car, but the teen driver led them on a short pursuit through the parking lot of Grandview Plaza.

He ultimately turned into an area with no exit and was arrested as he attempted to flee on foot.

The knife used in the robbery was found in the car.

The teen was charged as an adult and placed in York County Prison on $10,000 bail. Court documents identify him as Steven Anthony Sims of West Manheim Township.

He was charged with robbery, robbery of a motor vehicle, theft by unlawful taking, fleeing and eluding, and possession of an instrument of crime.
