When temperatures drop, bundling up isn’t always the way to go.
“When the weather gets frigid like this, it’s really important that parents with children in car seats avoid the bulky coats and clothing,” said Shannon DePatto, a pediatric health educator with Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. “A sweatshirt or fleece will do the job really well.”
DePatto said the puffy coats and multiple layers can prevent the car seat harnesses from doing their job.
“If I can pinch the fabric together, it’s too loose because of the bulk of the coat,” DePatto said. “In the event of a crash, the child is going to move forward and you’re going to then sustain a lot more injury.”
Safe Kids Dauphin County offers car seat inspections if you are unsure about the safety of your child’s device. For more information, call 717-531-7233 or visit PennStateHershey.org/injuryprevention.
