Saturday classes a snow-day option in Pa. bill

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The House Education Committee has unanimously passed legislation to give Pennsylvania’s school districts flexibility in making up snow days, including an option for Saturday classes.

House Bill 158 would allow school boards two options to meet the 180 days required by law when faced with a large number of closings for weather and other emergencies, other than extending the calendar into the summer break.

Boards could schedule classes on no more than one Saturday per month, or approve a school year with a minimum of 900 hours of elementary instruction and 990 hours of secondary instruction in lieu of 180 days.

The bill now goes to the full House.
