Wolf taps Lancaster school chief for Education secretary

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Governor-elect Tom Wolf says he will name the superintendent of the School District of Lancaster as secretary of the Department of Education.

Pedro Rivera, Lancaster’s superintendent since 2008, was one of 10 Hispanic leaders honored by the White House last year for extraordinary work in education.

Under his leadership, Lancaster’s graduation rates have increased and students have made gains in state assessment scores, and he implemented a community schools model that provides free breakfast and lunch, as well as eyeglasses, dental care, and medical services.

Wolf also tapped Kathy Manderino to be secretary of the Department of Labor and Industry.

Manderino served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for 18 years. She is currently the campaign manager for the Campaign for Fair Education Funding and was previously the senior vice president at Intercommunity Action, Inc., a human services agency.
