A special mass was held Sunday at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg in honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day.
Bishop ronald gainer celebrated the mass, which honored African-American faith and culture. The congregation heard a special choir performance from the St. Francis Xavier Parish in Baltimore. It was founded back in 1864, and is the oldest African-American catholic church in the nation.
“Today’s mass was awesome,” said Black Catholic Committee member Paula Headen, “It was a beautiful experience. Everyone came together, clapped their hands, praised the lord, in celebration of Martin Luther King. I thought it was an excellent day.”
Bishop Gainer says Dr. King’s message of unity and equality is just as important today as it was over 50 years ago when he delivered the “I Have A Dream” speech.
