Woman embezzled nearly $450K from employer, police say

POTTSVILLE, Pa. (WHTM) – A Schuylkill County woman has been charged with embezzling nearly $450,000 from her former employer.

Virginia Kunigonis, 52, of Pottsville, allegedly stole $449,064.07 from the Schuylkill Conservation District by writing fraudulent checks from a grant fund to herself and by making unauthorized credit card purchases for her personal expenses, according to state police in Schuylkill Haven.

Kunigonis also forged the names of other employees and then altered the canceled checks, police said.

The charges stem from an investigation into missing funds from the organization’s bank account that began in May.

Kunigonis was charged with forgery, theft, and access device fraud and released on $100,000 unsecured bail.
