LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – Two Lancaster hospitals will no longer publicize their first babies of the new year.
Lancaster Regional Medical Center and Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center have done away with the announcements, citing abduction and identity theft concerns.
A spokeswoman for the hospitals said the birth of a baby is a joyous event and there is always interest in the first baby of the new year, but their first obligation is to the safety and privacy of patients.
Many hospitals around the country have adopted the same policy.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says providing the names of babies, their parents and hometowns could put the children and family at risk.
The organization says hospitals should instead release a photo and only the baby’s first name.
