NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. (WHTM) – It has been a week since a Cumberland County teen went missing along the Susquehanna River. Those searching for 17-year-old Medard Kowalski, a student at Cedar Cliff High School, say they’ll be moving further south along the river Monday from where they’ve been searching for the past week. They also say they are now calling this a recovery mission.
Kowalski went missing last Monday. Police say he placed his canoe in the river on the Cumberland County side and he was last seen paddling south. He had been planning to hunt deer on Hoke Island. Nearby islands have been searched. The boy’s canoe and an oar, along with his cell phone and backpack have been found, but still no sign of him.
Sunday the search for Kowalski entered its seventh day. Crews were back on the water in the same area near Fairview Township. They were using search dogs and other equipment including a helicopter and underwater technology.
Officials say the operation has been a difficult process but they have had a lot of support from the community.
