A Carlisle woman, her teenage son and his friend are headed to trial in the death of a man who was tied up, beaten and then dumped in a South Middleton Township driveway last month.
Stephanie Vinice Scott, 36; Duane Jamell Fason Jr, 18; and Kaysean Jamal Smith, 20, were ordered held for court after a preliminary hearing Thursday at the Cumberland County Courthouse.
The three were charged last month with criminal homicide, unlawful restraint and tampering with evidence in the death of 45-year-old Joseph Mahoney.
Scott testified at the hearing that she had been renting a room from Mahoney and that he had been sexually abusing her. She said she also had reason to believe Mahoney was sexually abusing his daughter.
Scott told the court that she and Mahoney had been drinking and fighting on the night of Sept. 6 before she, her son and Smith tied him up and beat him for at least 45 minutes.
Prosecutors said Mahoney was then placed into his Ford Explorer and driven to South Middleton Township, where his body was placed along a driveway in the 1100 block of South Spring Garden Street.
He was found dead the next day.
Scott testified that they didn’t intend to kill Mahoney, but wanted to teach him a lesson.
A prison inmate who took the witness stand said Smith bragged of the killing in jail.
District Judge Susan Day approved additional counts of conspiracy, aggravated assault and simple assault against the three.
Day also denied a defense request to have the homicide charge reduced to manslaughter.
