DEP chief resigns amid porn email case

A member of Governor Tom Corbett’s cabinet has resigned a week after he was named as one of the former employees of the state attorney general’s office who sent or received pornography through office emails.

Corbett’s office said the governor has accepted the resignation of Department of Environmental Protection Secretary E. Christopher Abruzzo, effective immediately.

In a news release, the governor’s office said Abruzzo made his decision based on the best interest of the important mission of his department.

The news release gave no reason for Abruzzo’s departure.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane’s office said hundreds of inter-office pornographic emails sent or received between 2008 and 2012 were discovered during a review of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse prosecution.

Kane’s office said the exchanges involved current and former employees of the attorney general’s office, including Abruzzo and state police Commissioner Frank Noonan.

Both worked for Corbett when he was attorney general.
