Driver crashes in high-speed pursuit in Pa., Md.

A suspect in a retail theft crashed during a high-speed chase from Pennsylvania to Maryland and back, according to police in Franklin County.

Washington Township police said the driver was suspected of shoplifting at Martin’s food store in Waynesboro when an officer attempted a traffic stop Wednesday night on Route 997.

The driver led police on a pursuit into Maryland and back into Pennsylvania, reached speeds as high as 100 mph, and passed other vehicles on the right and in no passing zones before crashing into a car that had begun to pull over to the shoulder.

The suspect car overturned and came to rest on its roof. The driver was transported to Waynesboro Hospital and transferred to Meritus Trauma Center in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Police did not release the suspect’s name and a medical condition was not available.
