Gov. Corbett signs bill to protect police animals

Governor Tom Corbett today signed legislation to increase the penalty for anyone who hurts or kills a police animal.

The bill, referred to as “Rocco’s Law,” is named after a Pittsburgh K-9 officer who died after he was stabbed during an arrest.

The new law toughens penalties against anyone who severely injures or kills a police animal, including police horses, from a third to a second degree felony.

The second degree felony comes with a fine of $25,000 and up to 10 years in prison.
