Free trash cans distributed Saturday in Harrisburg

Harrisburg residents in need of a trash can can get one for free Saturday at the city’s new public works facility.

City Council Public Works chairwoman Sandra Reid has been collecting donations for the last several months and now has 1,400 to give away.

“These are $32, heavy-duty cans,” she said.

Reid has made it her mission to help clean up the city and, more importantly, educate residents about how to properly dispose of trash. She said in the future, the city will likely begin fining households that do not own at least one trash can, so this is an effort for residents to get a jump start.

“It’s about the quality of life. The residents are going to feel so much better when everybody is on the same page,” she said. “I don’t really want to ticket anybody, so come out and get one for free!”

To giveaway will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 1820 Paxton Street. Free recycling bins will also be available for pickup. Residents are simply asked to present an ID proving they live in the city.
