State police in Newport and the Perry County coroner’s office are investigating the discovery of suspected human skeletal remains.
The remains were found Tuesday on State Game Lands Number 170 in Rye Township by a man who was looking for wild flowers in the area, police said. Mike Miller has lived in the region his entire life. He says that stretch of land is popular among hikers and hunters. He says he was shocked to hear about the discovery. “No one was talking about it, but when I saw a fire truck and coroner go up the road,” said Miller, “I thought they were responding to a camping fire.”
Police said a preliminary examination by an anthropologist indicated the remains are those of an unidentified adult male.
The remains have been recovered and will need further examination for identification.
The investigation is ongoing as to the manner of death.
