Crews in Adams County were called to a morning fire at an exotic animal rescue in Hamiltonban Township after a dog alerted a family to the blaze.

The fire started around 5 a.m. at a home in the 300 block of Zoo Road, and the two residents were able to escape without injury.

Most of the animals were saved from the rescue, which was located in the basement of the home. Unfortunately two cats perished. A monkey is also reportedly missing.

The Adams County fire marshal is still investigating, though officials believe the cause was electrical in nature.

The home did have working smoke detectors.
