New program aims to curb gun violence

People who carry guns illegally will face a minimum prison bail of $100,000 under a new anti-violence initiative in Harrisburg and Dauphin County.

The $100K Illegal Gun Project will be unveiled Monday by Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico and Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse, according to a news release from city spokeswoman Joyce Davis.

Under the initiative, police officers and prosecutors will ask the courts to set bail at a minimum of $100,000 for felons who are prohibited from carrying a firearm, and for anyone carrying a firearm concealed on their person or in their vehicle without a license.

If a juvenile age 15 or older is illegally carrying a firearm, police and prosecutors will ask the courts to detain the youth at a juvenile detention facility.

The program will begin April 21.
