Ex-president stole baseball group’s funds, police say

A former president and treasurer of a youth baseball organization in York County has been charged in the theft of group funds.

Matthew C. Spangler, 43, of Spring Grove, was charged Thursday with two felony counts of theft, according to state police in York.

Police said they began an investigation when more than $20,000 was discovered missing from the Mason Dixon Ruffnecks youth baseball organization.

The investigation found Spangler was responsible for taking the money without the knowledge or approval of the organization's board of directors, police said.

A large sum of the money was used to fund Spangler's business venture, Gold Glove Sports Academy, and investigators also found that Spangler used the organization's credit and debit cards for his own use, according to police.

Thousands of dollars in additional funds were later found to be unaccounted for after noticing that organization and individual team budget sheets were manipulated, police said.
