Jay Paterno has ended his campaign for Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor.
In a statement Friday, Paterno cited a challenge filed with state elections official by a rival Democratic candidate last week.
Harrisburg councilman Brad Koplinski contested the validity of Paterno's signatures from Chester, Mifflin and Philadelphia counties.
Koplinski said some voters weren't registered at the address they listed, and some voters weren't registered as Democrats.
Paterno, son of late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, said it became clear that the ballot challenge could have been a long process.
He said he did not want the ongoing legal challenge to be a distraction in the race.
