Mulberry Street bridge in Harrisburg to close April 2

The Mulberry Street bridge in Harrisburg will close for eight months once repair work begins April 2, PennDOT announced today.

The 105-year-old bridge over Cameron Street and Paxton Creek will be closed to both traffic and pedestrians until late December.

As part of a $12.2 million construction contract, workers will remove a bridge deck built in 1957 and place a new deck over the original, according to a PennDOT news release.

The Mulberry Street bridge will also get substructure and
superstructure repairs, a new concrete barrier between the roadway and the
sidewalk, a new pedestrian railing, and
new lighting.

Drivers who use the bridge will be directed to a detour that follows 13th Street, Market Street and 4th Street.

The overall project will take two years to complete, but the bridge will be open to traffic in 2015 since most of the remaining repairs will be
underneath the deck.
