Fire in vacant Harrisburg apartment ruled arson

A fire in a vacant Harrisburg apartment early Thursday was started by an arsonist, according to investigators.

Fire Chief Brian Enterline said the fire at 1434 Market Street was extinguished by a fire sprinkler system that not only prevented significant property loss, but possibly saved several lives.

Enterline said there were no operating smoke detectors in the building, and without the
sprinkler system the fire would have spread throughout the
apartment before it was discovered.

The fire occurred while city firefighters were committed to another fire in the 1800 block of Market Street, where a woman was rescued and transported to a hospital with severe injuries.

Enterline said two city units were released to take on the second fire with the help of surrounding fire companies.

Harrisburg police are investigating the arson. Anyone with information is asked to call 717-255-3183.
