The Susquehanna Township School District Board met in a special meeting Friday night and accepted the resignation of the law firm King, Spry as its solicitor in the wake of the Shawn Sharkey scandal. Sharkey is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.
A grand jury report found the district was not liable and said the district kept quiet about the case at the advice of its lawyer.
The board also approved the distribution of a policy to all employees on the reporting of student abuse by a school employee.
The board declined to discuss what the grand jury report had to say, but residents and parents were very vocal, calling for the resignation of superintendent Susan Kegerise, among others.
“The administration has not lived up to my expectations,” said one parent. “For this reason I call for the immediate resignation of the superintendent, the two assistant superintendents, and I ask the board to beg Dr. Volkman to come back and restore this district to what it used to be.”
Several other speakers blasted Dr. Kegerise.
“Her response to that report, that it's time to 'move on,' showed a complete lack of empathy,” said one man, “and a display of unmitigated arrogance and a lack of real compassion for the individual.”
