Puppy Bowl has a one-of-a-kind Midstate star!

Puppies of all sizes and breeds will bowl over each other for the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet this Sunday at 3 p.m.

The network highlights rescue pups in need of homes on the special that keeps its audience howling.

A casting call is sent to nonprofit rescues, and this year a local puppy is one of the star players. Aurora is a liver-spotted Dalmatian from Middletown.

Ariel O'Brien is part of a dog rescue group that cares for Aurora and knew she would be a great match. “They have to be 12 weeks old by Oct. 3, which is when the taping is done in New York City,” said O'Brien.

O'Brien sent a picture, and the pup got picked! “I think it was a great honor when you have several thousand rescues, and maybe 200 dogs were in the puppy bowl,” O'Brien said.

“She's a very, very smart little girl.” Aurora is also a first for the Puppy Bowl: “She is the only deaf dog that has ever performed at puppy bowl,” said O'Brien.

The Spotted Dog Deaf Dalmatian Rescue that cares for Aurora wants people to know this about deaf dogs: They are just as smart as hearing dogs.

“We don't want to let the cat out of the bag, but we did get some sideline secrets,” added O'Brien. “I would say she was probably a wide receiver. She's very quick and very inquisitive and wasn't afraid of any of the other dogs. [She] wasn't afraid [to] save a play if she needed to.”

When asked if Aurora is a diva… “Absolutely, she's most definitely is a diva, yes,” responded O'Brien.

Aurora is training to be a therapy dog. Any family that is considering adopting her would have to be willing to allow her to serve as a therapy dog. If you would like to help the Spotted Dog Deaf Dalmatian Rescue, you can check out the website HERE.
