Slushy Susquehanna draws concern again

The start of another cold snap means more ice on the Susquehanna River.

In some areas of the river in Harrisburg there are visible ice chunks. With cold temperatures that are not expected to go above freezing for the next several days, ice is expected to pile up on the river.

The worry is that ice could create jams once the river finally thaws.

Officials are now keeping a close eye on the situation.

“Anytime there's any kind of ice on the river, I do have a heightened state of awareness and somewhat of a pit in my stomach because ultimately there is a risk. But it's really just a matter of maintaining awareness,” Ben Pratt, a hydraulic engineer at the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, said.

The are already reports of a jam forming near Marietta, Lancaster County.
