State police are searching for a man who led troopers on a high-speed pursuit through two counties Wednesday morning.
Tangled in a chain-link fence, a black Chevrolet Impala LT was still running as police officers and state troopers scoured the area of 19th and Hanover streets in Harrisburg for the driver.
Dalton Mabius said he was at a red light on Paxton Street when he noticed something odd in his rear-view mirror.
“I saw in the rear-view mirror this Impala come flying up the middle lane, weaving in and out of traffic,” Mabius explained. “I passed two more cops headed in the opposite way. It was a pretty crazy scene.”
Trooper Robert Hicks, a state police spokesman, said a trooper had stopped the car at the interchange of Interstate 81 and Route 581 in Cumberland County before the driver sped away.
“The initial attempt for a traffic stop was for a speeding violation,” Hicks said. “Why he would take off from that, I'm not sure.”
Hicks said the driver fled on Route 581 to Interstate 83, crossed the South Bridge and exited at Paxton Street before crashing in a yard at 19th and Hanover.
Police spent a few hours searching for the driver, who was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue varsity jacket with white sleeves.
Mabius said he was unsure of what had happened until he saw an abc27 News tweet with a photo of the Impala.
“It could've been harmful to people, even myself, he said. “I didn't realize – nothing processed at first. It's pretty crazy.”
