Pa. Senate plans hearing on medical marijuana bill

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – A state Senate committee is planning a public hearing on a bill that would allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes in Pennsylvania.

The chairman of the Law and Justice Committee on Thursday announced a Jan. 28 hearing in the state Capitol on the 34-page (http://bit.ly/1cw0qkm ) proposal.

Seven members of the 50-person Senate introduced the measure this week.

The bill would permit people with medical needs and a doctor's approval to obtain an identification card that would permit them to acquire marijuana legally. It would create the Medical Cannabis Board and an enforcement arm within the state police.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says 20 states and Washington, D.C., currently have some form of public medical marijuana program.
