Ex-funeral director gets 5-10 years in theft case

A former Mechanicsburg funeral director has been sentenced to five to 10 years in state prison for stealing from more than 100 customers who paid for their arrangements in advance.

Boyd Myers Jr., 52, received the sentence Thursday in Cumberland County Court.

“Realistically, it's a little bit saltier than we wanted, but the tail's very short; 10 years,” defense attorney Karl Rominger said. “It could have been 20, 40, 100.”

Myers last year pleaded guilty to 558 charges, including 165 felony counts, and admitted he stole more than $500,000 from 102 clients over a 15-year period while he was funeral director at the former Myers Funeral Home.

He had claimed he was not stealing the money, but was in over his head and was using the money to run his failing business.

“Whether he was using this place as a personal ATM or a personal loan for his business, it's stealing,” First Assistant District Attorney Jaime Keating said. “And when you steal people's peace of mind, you have to pay for that.”

The funeral home was sold in 2010 and is under new ownership.
