Police ID school van driver killed in Route 116 crash

Police have identified the driver of a school transportation van who died Thursday afternoon after crashing into a tractor-trailer on Route 116 in southern York County.

Kenton Fuhrman, 46, of Heidelberg Township, was traveling west on Route 116 when the crash occurred just west of Iron Ridge Road between Spring Grove and Hanover at 3:45 p.m., according to Southwestern Regional police.

Witnesses told investigators that the van, for unknown reasons, veered into the other lane of travel and struck the tractor-trailer head-on, police said.

No students were in the van, which is owned by Jacoby Transportation.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 45-year-old Shawn McCourry of Hanover, was not injured.

Police said it was snowing at the time of the crash, but the roadway was only wet.

Witnesses told officers that the road surface and the weather did not contribute to the crash, police said.

Route 116 was closed for several hours.

Police said heavy snow slowed emergency crews, and there was a large amount fuel and oil that needed to be cleared by a hazardous materials team.
