Many will deep fry a turkey this holiday season. But before you do, abc27 and Harrisburg Fire Department's Lieutenant Aldo Morelli have some tips to keep you safe.
“The first thing you really need to do is make sure the turkey's completely defrosted,” said Morelli. “If the turkey is not defrosted, what happens is, as it cooks, it steams. So that steam displaces the oil, and the oil will overflow onto the open flame, causing a disastrous effect.”
Before putting the turkey into the oil, be sure to shut off the flame. Now it's ready to cook!
As tempting as it may be on a cold, wet day, make sure to fry outside, and stay away from your deck and house.
“Also make sure you have a fire extinguisher with you too!” added Morelli.
