Student gets probation in central Pa. baby death

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) – A judge has sentenced a young woman to four years of probation for discarding her stillborn baby in a bathroom trash can at her central Pennsylvania high school.

The Intelligencer/Lancaster New Era ( said 19-year-old Cherlie LaFleur pleaded guilty Tuesday in Lancaster County Court to concealing the death of a child, a misdemeanor.

Prosecutor Randall Miller said the male fetus, about 27 weeks old, likely was stillborn because an autopsy showed there was no air in its lungs.

A teacher at McCaskey High School testified that LaFleur came to the United States after the devastating 2010 earthquake in her native Haiti and has the emotional capacity of 10-year-old.

A school custodian found the baby several hours after it was placed in the trash can on April 30.
