A tractor-trailer driver who drove away from a traffic stop in Berks County while a trooper was still hanging onto the truck was arrested Friday morning after a day-long search, state police in Reading said.

Harold A. Davis Jr., 56, of Philadelphia, has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering and one count of resisting arrest, police said.

A Caernarvon Township police officer on Thursday morning had stopped Davis on Interstate 176 and found he had a warrant for his arrest on robbery charges in Florida. When other officers and a trooper arrived to assist, Davis refused to get out of his truck, police said.

Police broke a window and used a stun gun on Davis before he began to drive away with the trooper still on the step of the truck, forcing another officer to jump out of the way.

Davis twice rammed a police vehicle used as a rolling roadblock and pulled over only after the trooper, still clinging to the truck, fired into the truck's tires and engine. He then fled into a wooded area of Robeson Township, police said.

Police spent the day searching for Davis but did not find him until morning, when he was found hiding in an archery club. He was arrested after a long foot chase and was taken to Reading Hospital after complaining of chest pain, police said.
