A Franklin County man lost more than $1,000 in a telephone scam where the caller threatened to hurt his wife, according to state police in Chambersburg.
The caller told the man his wife had been in a vehicle accident and would be harmed unless he wired money to an account in Puerto Rico, police said.
He was told to stay on the phone and not hang up, police said.
The victim went to this bank and withdrew money that he wired via MoneyGram.
He then reported the call to state police said troopers located the wife, who was never in danger.
Authorities believe the phone call came from outside the country.
State police said they've seen an increasing number of scams that have been created to catch people off-guard by faking an urgent situation.
