Police: Driver swerved to strike dog

State police in Newport said an unknown driver purposely swerved and struck a dog that was out for a walk with its owner.

The dog was clipped by the back of the car. It received a bloody lip, but has no serious injuries, police said.

Police said the dog's owner, a 28-year-old Carroll Township man, was walking his pet in the first block of Texaseastern Road when the incident occurred on the afternoon of July 17.

The driver fled the scene, police said.

Trooper Robert Hicks, a state police spokesman, said the dog's owner did not recognize the car or the driver.

He said it appears to have been a random incident.
