Some in York unhappy over fireworks move

For the first time in 35 years, York's Fourth of July fireworks will not go off from the fairgrounds.

Because the event was in jeopardy, the display was moved to Sovereign Bank Stadium to save money.

“It's downtown where people can come and enjoy the festivities, there is a lot of stuff going on down there throughout the day so it's just going to be a great family event,” said Mary Anne Winkelman, vice president of the Cultural Alliance.

Thousands of people are expected to take in the Fourth of July tradition, but the move is raising concerns among residents.

“Parking is always a problem no matter what event's going on,” city resident Ashley Trgovac said.

“I don't want to fight the traffic because its almost like a hassle,” said Michelle Jones.

Jones said if she had it her way, the event would return to the fairgrounds.

“I am used to the fairgrounds, so I would probably feel like it should be back at the fairgrounds,” she said.

But if not for the ballpark, the fireworks may have been canceled altogether.

“Change is very difficult, it always is,” said Winkelman. “This is a small town. Whether it's on the west end of town or in downtown, our streets were not made for a lot of traffic. People are just going to have to come, keep calm, stay positive.”
