Lancaster man arrested for death on Route 283

Police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run crash death last week on Route 283 in Lancaster County.

Brian Myers, 47, of Lancaster, was charged Friday with accidents involving death or personal injury, tampering with evidence, and summary offenses of driving with a suspended license, failing to report an accident to police, driving at safe speed, and operating a vehicle without a valid inspection, according to court documents.

The charges stem from a crash the night of June 3, when 68-year-old Cristofaro Gambino was
found dead on the outside berm of Route 283 westbound, just west of Strickler
Road in Rapho Township.

Manheim Borough police said Gambino apparently had exited his vehicle, which was pulled to the side of the
road, and was struck by a vehicle that left the scene.

were looking for a car with moderate
to severe front end damage, and the next morning received an anonymous tip that a silver sedan in the M&M Mars parking lot had blood on the broken windshield and significant damage, the complaint states.

The vehicle, registered to Myers' wife, was later found in a driveway behind the couple's home with a large hole in the windshield and what appeared to be human hair in the cracks, police said in the documents.

Myers initially told police that his wife drove him to work, and that he noticed the damage when his wife picked him up at the end of his shift, according to the complaint.

Police said in the court documents that Myers told a co-worker that he had hit a deer, but told his human resources director: “I hit him. He has a name. I know his age. I hit him and killed him.”

The vehicle's event data recorder determined the speed of the vehicle at impact was about 78 miles per hour and there was no evidence of braking, the complaint states.

Myers was arraigned before a district judge who set bail at $25,000.
