Work slated on I-83 Bridge over Route 30

Work has started in advance of repairs to the I-83 bridge over Route 30 at Exit 21 in Manchester Township, York County.

PennDOT spokesman Mike Crochunis said repairs to the 54-year-old bridge are necessary to keep the bridge in operation until funds are available for more extensive work.

Crochunis said I-83 travelers over the next few weeks may
encounter nighttime lane restrictions near Exit 21 between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. as crews reconstruct the shoulders.

Traffic on the interstate eventually will be shifted, and PennDOT has set a tentative date of July 8 to close the I-83 South ramp to Route 30 East.

Crochunis said the ramp must be closed for up to 160 days in order to safely maintain traffic.

He added that at times it will be necessary to detour I-83 traffic between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. in order to jack up the bridge and replace the concrete bearings.

Repairs are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.
