Governor Tom Corbett has scheduled a news conference to provide an update on road closures and bridge damage as the result of a tanker fire near Harrisburg this morning.
The news conference is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The tanker was fully loaded with diesel fuel when it overturned and caught fire shortly after 6 a.m. on the I-81 northbound ramp to 322 West near mile marker 67.
PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said the burning fuel caused an intense fire that “pulverized” the deck of the bridge on the ramp from I-81 northbound to Route 22/322 westbound.
The fire also buckled the beams of the bridge where the truck crashed, and the bridge above that carries eastbound Route 22/322 over the interstate and into the city, Penny said.
PennDOT is evaluating the bridges to determine whether the structural integrity before allowing traffic on the ramps and on the interstate below.
The ramps and the interstate will remain closed until further notice.
