State police resume breathalyzer testing

State police are using breathalyzer testing again in DUI cases. The system was stopped for several weeks after a Harrisburg attorney raised concerns the machines were not accurate because the were not calibrated.

A Dauphin County judge agreed, and breath testing was used in 5 counties. Officials have consulted with the manufacturer of the machines, and they will use a solution to properly calibrate them.

State police used blood testing only when breath testing was shut down. Some experts say it's the most effective tool to get impaired drivers off the roads. The testing can detect illegal or prescription drugs in addition to alcohol in a drivers system.

Attorney Justin McShane says the state police and prosecutors should do the right thing and admit the system was flawed and revisit the DUI cases that were effected by the inaccurate testing procedure.
