A Dauphin County jury has handed down a guilty verdict in a murder trial where a Harrisburg man faces the death penalty.
Miguel Figueroa-Novoa, 25, was convicted Friday morning of first-degree murder for the shooting death of his 19-year-old girlfriend, Yarelis Berrios, at their Ivey Lane apartment just two days before Christmas in 2010.
Figueroa-Novoa was also found guilty of attempted homicide for seriously wounding Berrios' mother, Lithz Serrano, before trying to take his own life.
The jury deliberated for about two hours before returning with the verdict.
Authorities said Figueroa-Novoa and Berrios lived shared an apartment with their young son, who was not hurt. Berrios' 9-year-old niece witnessed the shootings, but escaped with the two-year-old boy and ran for help.
The sentencing phase of the trial begins Monday.
