Mechanicsburg man charged in 5 armed robberies

A Mechanicsburg man has been charged with five armed robberies at Cumberland County restaurants and businesses at the end of last year.

Alex J. Kennedy, 24, was arrested Thursday at his home in the 1500 block of South Market Street on an unrelated charge and sent to Cumberland County Prison, according to Upper Allen Township police, who said they charged Kennedy with the robberies on Friday.

Kennedy is accused of robberies at the Pizza Hut at 610 East Simpson Street on November 4, at the Subway restaurant at the Windsor Park Shopping Center on November 12, at the Hemps Above tobacco shop at 105 North Arch Street on November 15, Subway, at the Subway in the 1000 block of Wesley Drive on November 18, and the Subway at 4 Gettysburg Pike on December 11, police said.

Police said Kennedy used a handgun to commit the crimes at Hemps Above and the Wesley Drive Subway, and a crowbar or stick was used during the incidents at the Pizza Hut and Windsor Park Subway. Police previously reported that a knife was used during the robbery at the Gettysburg Pike Subway.

Kennedy was charged with robbery, theft, simple assault, criminal conspiracy, possession of instruments of crime, and firearms carried without a license. He was being held in the county prison on $500,000 bail.
