A former Chambersburg teacher arrested last month has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Harrisburg for receipt and possession of child pornography.
Jeffrey Schmutzler, of Fayettesville, was indicted Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced today.
Schmutzler, a former Spanish teacher at Chambersburg Area High School, was arrested March 21 following charges filed in a criminal complaint and remains in custody. He has since resigned from his teaching position.
Federal prosecutors who met with parents at the high school this week said Schmutzler used his home computer to superimpose photographs of male students on child porn images. They also said they don't believe he didn't distribute the images, but kept them to himself.
Prosecutors also told parents that Schmutzler wrote fake fantasy stories and that his home computer, which had four times the normal storage capacity, was filled with pornographic images. One investigator told parents they found no illegal images on Schmutzler's work computer.
The U.S. Attorney's Office has said that at this point in the investigation, they have no evidence that any female students were involved, or that there was any unlawful contact with any students.
Anyone with information concerning the case is asked to call U.S. Postal Inspector Michael Corricelli at 717-257-5581.
Prosecutors said that anyone who feels they are a victim and need assistance should call the victim/witness coordinator for the Middle District of Pennsylvania at 1-866-673-7340 or 717-221-4482.
