Sue Paterno breaks silence, speaks to Katie Couric

Sue Paterno has broken her silence.

The matriarch of the famous family and wife of legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is speaking for the first time since the Sandusky scandal rocked Nittany Nation and turned her family's life upside-down.

Paterno recently did an interview with Katie Couric. It will air Monday on 'Katie,' which runs on abc27 at 3 p.m.

Couric got a tour of the Paterno's home and a glimpse into State College's first family.

“I think they're still in a state of shock that this could happen,” Couric said in a via-satellite interview with abc27 on Thursday. “I don't think they were particularly close socially to Jerry Sandusky.”

Also shocking to the Paternos, according to Couric, was the extent of Sandusky's abuse.

“Sue said sometimes on the road at a hotel, Sandusky would be in the pool with the Paterno kids and she said, 'Never in a million years would I have let my children spend time with Jerry Sandusky if I had any inkling he could have committed these crimes,' ” Couric said.

Couric described Sue Paterno as feisty and strong, but said she's still grieving the loss of her husband.

Couric said she also interviewed three Paterno children and they are still anguished by the stunningly fast fall of the patriarch, JoePa.

In mere months he spiraled from on top of the college football world, to mourned in death, to having his statue yanked from his beloved university.

“I think in their private moments it hurts,” Couric said. “To see someone who they continue to look up to so much to be criticized and disgraced toward the end of his life, I'm sure it's tough for them. But they don't really talk about that. They talk about supporting his legacy as a husband and a father and someone who deeply loved Penn State and the entire Penn State community.”
