Harrisburg man jailed for thefts of warming cars

An 18-year-old Harrisburg man has admitted to stealing several vehicles that had been left unattended with the engines running during a cold snap last month.

Susquehanna Township police said Darell E. Aikens, of the 1800 block of Park Street, admitted to stealing three vehicles in the township as well as others in Penbrook and Paxtang.

Township police charged Aikens with three counts of felony theft for the incidents that occurred after the owners left the unlocked cars running to warm up while they went back into their homes.

Aikens is accused of taking a 2003 Cadillac from the 2200 block of Boas Street on January 18 and a 2009 Ford Fusion from the 3500 block of
Schoolhouse Lane on January 22, according to police.

After another theft on January 28, a Susquehanna Township detective saw the stolen vehicle and followed it until the driver eventually slid
on a snow covered roadway and struck a curb before fleeing on foot.

All of the vehicles have been recovered.

Aikens has also been charged by Harrisburg police with receiving stolen property, by Penbrook police with two counts of theft, and by Paxtang police with one count of theft, according to online court documents.
