Driver arrested after 100 mph chase on 81, 11

A York man is facing numerous charges following a police pursuit that reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour both on Interstate 81 and Route 11 in Cumberland County.

Matthew Sherman, 31, was pulled over late Thursday near mile marker 58 in Hampden Township, but fled the stop before a trooper could talk to him, according to state police in Carlisle.

He was seen weaving in and out of traffic and passing on the berm before exiting at Route 11, where the pursuit continued as Sherman ran several red lights, passed vehicles on the left and right berms, and nearly caused several collisions with other vehicles, police said.

Sherman was stopped after a nine-mile chase when he ran over spike strips set up by Silver Spring Township police in the 6600 block of Carlisle Pike, and was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

He was charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless endangerment, driving with a suspended license, and numerous traffic violations.
