Governor Tom Corbett has signed an execution warrant for a man convicted in the 2007 shooting death of an Elizabethtown businessman.
Abraham Sanchez Jr., now 24, is scheduled to die by lethal injection March 7.
Sanchez was 18 when he repeatedly shot Ray Diener in front of Diener's
West Donegal Township home during a botched robbery attempt in May 2007.
Authorities said Sanchez and three friends were looking for a home to
burglarize when they stopped at Diener's home. A co-defendant,
Lorenzo Schrijver, rang the doorbell and told Diener his car had broken down, and Diener was handing his cell phone to Schrijver when Sanchez came out of hiding and ordered Diener to the ground at gunpoint.
According to court documents, Diener and Sanchez were wrestling over the gun when Sanchez fired and Diener fell to the
ground, pleading for help. Sanchez backed up and shot Diener in the
chest and neck before the four fled, leaving Diener to die on his doorstep.
Sanchez was sentenced to death in Lancaster County Court in
March 2009. He is incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution at Greene.
Schrijver and co-defendant Robert Baker were sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison for
third-degree murder. The fourth defendant, Emru Kebede, was sentenced
to life in prison for second-degree murder.
