20 students taken to hospital after school bus crash

About 20 students were taken to hospitals for evaluation after a sport utility vehicle crashed into the back of a school bus Friday morning in York County.

Lower Windsor Township Police Chief Tim Caldwell said the crash occurred in the area of the 5000 block of Mount Pisgah Road just after 7 a.m.

Caldwell said the bus was carrying about 31 students from their homes to the Eastern York middle and high schools.

He said the driver had just picked up some students and was preparing to leave when the bus was struck from behind by a Chevrolet Suburban traveling about 40 miles per hour.

He said the injured students complained of pain, but there appeared to be no broken bones and none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The driver of the Suburban, Marianna Prugar of York, had no
complaint of pain but was transported to a hospital for evaluation, police said.

The bus driver refused medical treatment.

Students who were not injured were placed on another bus, where they could be picked up by parents or continue on to school.

A York Hospital spokesman said 15 of the students were treated in their emergency room for minor injuries.
