Religious group holds vigil for Harrisburg shooting victim

The group lit candles, prayed and sang hymns.

Friday night, a handful of religious leaders gathered at the end of Cloverly Road in the Hoverter Homes community for candlelight vigil.

They wanted friends and family of the late Luis Diaz to know they do not stand alone.

“We try to offer as much as we can, as much comfort as we can, and we do that with the singing songs of praise and just showing them that we care,” said Dr. Lavette Paige, pastor of Martin Luther King Baptist Church in Harrisburg.

The group also wanted to raise gun violence awareness and tell everyone that it will not be tolerated.

“We need to call awareness to the fact that another life has been lost,” said Belita Mitchell, pastor at First Church of the Brethren in Harrisburg.

Diaz, a Harrisburg man, was gunned down in his girlfriend's apartment Tuesday night. He was shot four times in the head and chest, according to the Dauphin County coroner.

Coroner Graham Hetrick on Wednesday identified the victim as 35-year-old Luis Diaz.

Diaz's body was found on the kitchen floor of the apartment at 1114B Cloverly Road in the Hoverter Homes community, when officers responded to the shooting at around 8 p.m.

Police said his girlfriend told officers that she was upstairs, heard a commotion and shots, went to the stairway and saw a man in a hooded sweatshirt leaving the apartment.

She said she saw Diaz on the floor before she went to her door and screamed for help, police said.

Hetrick said Diaz was shot with a .40-caliber weapon. Investigators recovered three of the four bullets.

Police have not named a suspect in this homicide.
