A new underpass that runs underneath Chocolate Avenue in Hershey will create a safer route for pedestrians, Derry Township police said.
Officials said people have been complaining for years that drivers were running red lights and crosswalks and pedestrians were jaywalking.
Debra Eisenhour was hit in a crosswalk two years ago by a truck while crossing Chocolate Avenue. She said the underpass gives her piece of mind and she is looking forward to using it on a daily basis.
Eisenhour said a number of people who work in the area have been hit and there have been countless numbers of near misses.
Officials said another underpass will be built next year near Zoo America.
